A Measurement of Gravitational Lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background by Galaxy Clusters Using Data from the South Pole Telescope

چکیده
Clusters of galaxies are expected to gravitationally lens the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and thereby generate a distinct signal in the CMB on arcminute scales. Measurements of this effect can be used to constrain the masses of galaxy clusters with CMB data alone. Here we present a measurement of lensing of the CMB by galaxy clusters using data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Viewpoint Matter Adds Twist to Cosmic Microwave Background Subject Areas: Cosmology a Viewpoint On: Detection of B -mode Polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background with Data from the South Pole Telescope
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) is the oldest discernible light in the Universe. It provides us with a photograph of an infant Universe—the Universe 13.7 billion years ago. But this ancient snapshot has been slightly distorted by intervening matter. As CMB light rays propagated through the Universe to us, they encountered countless lumps of matter that slightly deflected their direction b...
متن کاملCMB Cluster Lensing: Cosmography with the Longest Lever Arm
We discuss combining gravitational lensing of galaxies and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by clusters to measure cosmographic distance ratios, and hence dark energy parameters. Advantages to using the CMB as the second source plane, instead of galaxies, include: a welldetermined source distance, a longer lever arm for distance ratios, typically up to an order of magnitude higher sensitiv...
متن کاملDetection of B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background with data from the South Pole Telescope.
Gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background generates a curl pattern in the observed polarization. This "B-mode" signal provides a measure of the projected mass distribution over the entire observable Universe and also acts as a contaminant for the measurement of primordial gravity-wave signals. In this Letter we present the first detection of gravitational lensing B modes, using f...
متن کاملWeighing Dark Matter Halos with the Cosmic Microwave Background
Weighing something that is partially invisible is very challenging. But this is exactly what astronomers contend with when estimating masses of galaxies and their clusters. These structures contain significant amounts of still-mysterious dark matter residing in a “halo” extending beyond the standard, baryonic (and mostly luminous) matter. Gravitational lensing allows astronomers to get around t...
متن کاملMapping the dark matter using weak lensing
Weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by foreground structures has proven to be a powerful tool to study the mass distribution in the universe. The advent of panoramic cameras on 4m class telescope has led to a first generation of surveys that already compete with large redshift surveys in terms of the accuracy with which cosmological parameters can be determined. The next surveys, whi...
